Fresh Dirt for September

Fall can be glorious. We often think of gardening as a spring and early summer adventure. As the garden starts to wane, we pop a few chrysanthemums in the ground and call it quits. Turn your inspiration to what is right in front of you.

If you haven't already done so, remember to sign up for a regular dose of Fresh Dirt on the contact us page.

Autumn Joy

  • Look at how the ornamental grasses have transformed with their delicate seed heads and pale pinky rosy colors. Look at the birds gathering to dine on the sunflower seeds and other perennial remnants. There is much activity and color in the garden as the clear reds, yellows and oranges are painted on your shrubs and trees. This is a sight we look forward to with great anticipation. We relish in the cooler air.

    Leafing through

  • Fall is a great time to install a garden. The cooler soil and air temperatures combine to give your new landscape a wonderful beginning. If you're thinking about adding deciduous trees to your garden, now is the perfect time to stroll around your favorite nurseries. You will see the trees in their full fall array, before they drop their leaves. The colors you see will be repeated in the same dramatic showing next fall. Something to think about.

    Under cover

  • Autumn is also the time of harvest. After your vegetable and cutting garden are done, plant a cover crop to enrich the soil and dig them in. Some crops will need the addition of nitrogen, some won't. Check before you plant. Do this task and start fantasizing about what you might grow next year.

    Divide and conquer

  • As a general rule, divide spring and summer bloomers in late summer or fall. Divide fall bloomers in early spring. This gives them a whole growing season to establish themselves. When perennial clumps become too large, they compete with themselves. The outer edges are thriving in fresh dirt and the center of the plant suffers. Dividing the plant will of course give you more plants, but it will also provide the four basics that every plant needs, moisture, air, light and nutrients.
  • Nature is beautiful every day and fall is just one the seasons we live to enjoy!
